Start roller derby

Interested in being a player or referee?

DRRD organizes beginners phases twice a year (usually in February-April and October-December), where new enthusiastic skaters of both player and referee variety get to learn how to skate and take contact on roller skates! No previous experience is required, we will teach you everything everything you’ll need to know, all the way from basic skating technique.

For the beginners practices everyone needs to have their own roller derby gear that can be tried on and tested at open skate sessions that take place before each course. You will need quad skates, a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, wristguards and a mouthguard.

The age limit for our beginners’ practices is 16 years. Anyone can participate in our beginners’ practices and certain practices regardless of gender, but in our competing teams we as a league affiliated with the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) follow the WFTDA gender policy. We don’t have men’s teams.

If you are interested, do not hesitate to contact us! We also post information on upcoming beginners’ practices on our website, Facebook and Instagram. Join us!

Interested in being a non-skating officials or a volunteer?

It’s also possible to join DRRD as an NSO, non-skating official. You can come and see what it’s all about and start your NSO career any time of the year. If you’re interested, contact board@dirtyriverrollerderby.com. You’ll get to practice NSO duties especially on Mondays when we organize intraleague scrimmages every week. As an NSO you get to do things like blow the whistle, take time and keep track of the score and the skaters’ penalties. And, of course, you get to be an important part of our league and the game. No roller derby game can start without someone blowing the whistle!

We organize 2-3 games a year in Turku and always need a lot of volunteers to sell tickets or work in first aid among other things. Contact board@dirtyriverrollerderby.com if you’re interested!
