Contents of our beginners’ practices

Our roller derby beginners practices last for two to three months. Practices vary from one to two times a week. In the beginners practices you learn how to achieve a good derby stance, skating technique, game rules and the basics of contact in derby.

After the beginners practices, based on your skill level you can move on to our league’s joint practices or keep participating in beginners’ practices. Everyone can develop in their own pace and safety comes first. With an appropriate skill level, you can join the all league practices which we have around two times a week. If you want, you can apply for our team. In our league it’s possible to play competitively or skate in a safe environment without being competitive.

During the beginners practices you will also learn how our league works and you get to meet a lot of new people! Our league has a diverse and great set of people. We manage everything ourselves, so the members of our league are required to participate in fundraising and organising things.

EVERYONE can join!

You can participate in Dirty River Roller Derby’s beginners practices if you’re over 16. We welcome people of all genders, sexualities, bodies, nationalities and you don’t have to have a sports background of any kind. There is no previous skill set required, we will teach you everything you need to know. Our teams follow WFTDA’s gender policy. We don’t have a men’s team currently.

Our league has also a lot of non-skating people and you can join our activities if you’re interested in organising, coaching, officiating, refereeing or being otherwise involved. Everyone in our league is equal and equally welcome.

Everyone in our beginners practices and league have to agree to our values.
